Cate Eales

I'm an American living in Kelowna, BC (Canada) with my husband, Eric. I miss the Peet's Coffee and Mexican food that is so easy to find in my beloved San Francisco Bay Area. But not the traffic. Having given up driving way too fast, I still stay up way too late and drink way too much coffee. I own and operate Computer Care Kelowna, a mobile computer business providing on-site service for home and small business customers. My weekly column, "Getting Along With Your Computer" appears Mondays on castanet.net. The column archive is available any time at the Computer Care Kelowna website.

Timeline/Waterline

Stop #40 on the Public Art in Kelowna tour is Timeline/Waterline, in the Abbott Street Heritage Conservation Area.  These six concrete panels with photos and maps set into them tell the story of the area.  The top of each panel is meant to look like sand on a beach. This stretch of Abbott Street became …

My Life In Tech: Microsoft Buys Skype (NSFW)

"It looks like you're trying to make a video call. Would you like help?"

As Microsoft officially welcomes Skype, promising Microsoft and Skype will remain focused on their shared goal of connecting all people across all devices and accelerating both companies’ efforts to transform real-time communications for consumers and enterprise customers… I can only think about this: Should be an interesting next few months.

Public Art in Kelowna: Fruit Stand

Fruit Stand

Fruit Stand is a tribute to Kelowna’s agricultural history.  It is described in the Public Art brochure (PDF) as “whimsical” and I would have to agree.  Seven concrete and terrazzo fruits stand on five concrete benches, and there are mosaics recreating fruit box labels from the 1930’s and 1940’s.  The mosaics measure 26″ by 30″ …
